Born 1986 in Riga, Marcis Imants was admitted already at the age of nine as a singer to the Riga Cathedral Boys Choir. From 1994 – 2005 he studied choir conducting at the local Cathedral choir school. Since 2005 he has been studying at the choral conducting department of Jazeps Vitols Academy of Music. In the same year he was appointed as conductor of the University Choir Riga.
Marcis Imants has also taken part in various conducting competitions. He is prize winner of the International Competition for Choir Conductors in Vienna (2004), of the Teodors Reiters Choir Conductors Competition in Latvia and the International Competition for Choir Conductors “Towards Polyphony” in Wroclaw 2005 (2nd prize). 2006 he also took part in the Kurt Thomas Cursus in Utrecht conducting works for choir and orchestra.
Among the outstanding projects, where Marcis Imants participated as singer, are concerts with Gidon Kremer as well as performances at the Lockenhaus Kammermusikfest.
